About the department
The department is responsible for the development of the university’s HR policies, strategies and procedures on all aspects of people management, including staff planning, recruitment and selection, pay and conditions of service, management development and employment relations, and via the Equality and Diversity team ensuring equality of opportunity for all staff.
Our HR Strategy has four main strategic themes: recruiting and retaining talent; building high quality leadership and management; developing staff communication and engagement; and building individual and collective performance.
Departmental Management Team
The Director of People advises the university’s senior management team, is a member of the university’s executive board and attends a number of university committees. The Director of People manages the overall strategy of the department and is supported by the Deputy Director of HR, who deputises for her, drives forward the strategy and is supported by senior managers with responsibilities for divisions of the department, and an administrator.
This area is responsible for services covering pay and reward, union relationship management, formal negotiating and consultation frameworks, pay and conditions of service, employment legislation impact assessment, policy development and review, performance management, HR advice and guidance, and formal casework management.
Leadership and Organisational Development
The Leadership and Organisational Development team is managed by the Head of Leadership and Organisational Development, who is supported by two Leadership and Organisational Development Advisers and an Administrator. The team is responsible for the co-ordination of organisational development, leadership and management development training, as well as staff induction.
This area is led by the HR Manager (Operations). HR Operations is the largest team in HR and consists of three small teams which work closely together to support managers and staff in a full range of their day to day activities. These teams are as follows: Recruitment and Orientation, HR Support as well as HR Systems, Information and Projects.
Equality and Diversity
The Equality and Diversity team is managed by the Equality and Diversity Manager who is supported by two Equality and Diversity Advisers and an Equality and Diversity Coordinator. The team who are responsible for institutional equalities strategies and policies, equalities charters’ work and staff engagement and awareness activities on equality, diversity and inclusion.
